I racconti di Canterbury è il secondo film di quella che lo stesso regista definì laTrilogia della vita e che comprendono anche Decameron e Il fiore delle Mille e una notte. Il riferimento è, questa volta, alle novelle di Geoffrey Chaucer, del quale nel film Pasolini stesso ricopre il ruolo.
All'inizio del film, Chaucer/Pasolini si unisce idealmente ai molti pellegrini diretti all'Abbazia di Canterbury; in seguito Pasolini rappresenterà il narratore che, all'interno di uno studio, penserà e scriverà i racconti.
I temi di Canterbury sono, come in Decameron, sesso, amore e morte, con un'accentuazione di quest'ultimo: in tutti gli episodi, viene infatti rappresentato un funerale, o un assassinio, o un condannato a morte, o un moribondo. (continua a leggere)

The Canterbury Tales (Italian: I racconti di Canterbury) is a 1972 Italian film directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini and based on the medieval narrative poem The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. It is the second film in Pasolini's 'Trilogy of Life'. It won the Golden Bear at the22nd Berlin International Film Festival.
The adaptation covers eight of the 24 tales and contains abundant nudity, sex, and slapstick humor. Many of these scenes are present or at least alluded to in the original as well, but some are Pasolini's own additions.  See full summary

Réalisé en 1972, ce film est le deuxième volet de la Trilogie de la Vie, avec Le Décaméron (1971) et Les Mille et une nuits (1974). Pasolini y adapte successivement les grands récits de l'italien Boccace, de l'anglais Geoffrey Chaucer (interprété par Pasolini), et des mythes orientaux.

The concluding part of Pier Paolo Pasolini's "Trilogy Of Life", following The Decameron and The Canterbury Tales, Arabian Nights corrects many of the mistakes found in the latter, noticeably its ramshackle, uneven approach, and returns to the charming territory of the former. Indeed, the film is as good as The Decameron, if not better, and is generally considered to be the trilogies crowning moment and one of Pasolini's finest films (critic Tony Rayns recently included it amongst his choices for Sight and Sound's 2002 Top Ten Critics' Poll). Les Mille et une Nuits, après Le Décaméron et Les Contes de Canterbury achève ce que Pasolini appelle sa "Trilogie de la vie", que l'on peut résumer comme un hymne à la vie, à la jeunesse, à l'amour. Pasolini y revendique "Le pastiche", le collage de "culture haute" et de "culture basse". Drammatico, durata 105 min.

Giacobbe (Clementi), insegnante in un'accademia d'arte drammatica a Roma, si trova un altro “io” che compie in sua vece le azioni criminose o rivoluzionarie che egli vorrebbe, ma non sa compiere. Ispirato al romanzo giovanile Il sosia (1846) di Dostoevskij, è un film molto teorico nel suo carattere antinaturalistico e nel suo continuo passaggio dalla vita al cinema e viceversa, godardiano soltanto in marginali aspetti tecnici o aneddotici. Sono evidenti, invece, gli echi dell'espressionismo: il gioco delle ombre, l'uso della luce, l'abolizione del concetto di spazio tra interni ed esterni, la conformazione dell'inquietante casa-utero, abitata da Giacobbe e dal suo cameriere Petruschka (Tofano, nella sua ultima apparizione sullo schermo), motivo che sarà ripreso in Ultimo tango a Parigi. Film di contestazione e sulla contestazione, ma anche sull'impotenza rivoluzionaria. Le scene sono di Francesco Tullio Altan che si firma Jean Robert Marquis. Vi appaiono Giulio Cesare Castello, Ninetto Davoli, Giancarlo Nanni, Umberto Silva, Salvatore Samperi.

As always Bertolucci was able to draw performances that transform t characters he created into tangable moments. Particularly remarkable is Pierre Clementi's performance of a man with two identities. Есть особый смысл в том, что Бернардо Бертолуччи поставил свою третью ленту по мотивам повести «Двойник» Федора Достоевского именно в 1968 году, когда предсказанная им еще за четыре года до этого революция оказалась «пирровой», принесла только боль, разочарование, отчаяние.

Мучительное раздвоение сознания, разорванность бытия, ощущаемые подспудно в ситуации «перед революцией», приобретают угрожающий, губительный для индивида характер в период краха. Взвинченный, экспрессивный, «безумный» стиль фильма соответствует эпохе разброда и шатаний, смятения личности, которая не тождественна сама себе, расколота на две половинки, причем двойник выступает в качестве партнера, точнее — соучастника, а вульгарнее — подельника. Он не просто представляет злую, враждебную сущность, некоего «мистера Хайда», проявляющегося в результате научных экспериментов в «докторе Джекиле», а находится также в негласном сговоре со своим «положительным» визави, молодым буржуа Якобом. Он выполняет за него скверные деяния, всю грязную работу, давая возможность остаться непричастным и лишь рефлектировать по поводу грубой действительности, которая не оправдывает ожиданий.
