Su un quadro di vita provinciale del primo dopoguerra si innesta la rievocazione del mito di Edipo che, ignaro, uccide il padre e sposa la madre finché scopre la verità e, accecatosi, si avvia alla purificazione di Colono. Uno dei film più autobiografici di Pasolini, che nella storia tragica di Edipo dà, in chiave barbara, un'altra testimonianza sulla difficoltà del vivere. Ammirevole la Mangano, in un'ambiguità di porcellana con un Citti di sofferta intensità. Il più armonioso dei film “mitici” di PPP, che appare nel ruolo di gran sacerdote.

On est ensuite transporté dans la Grèce antique où Œdipe, fils du roi de Thèbes, encore bébé et voué à la mort suite à une prophétie prévoyant le meurtre du père et l'inceste avec la mère, est discrètement sauvé et recueilli par la famille royale de Corinthe. Devenu adulte, le jeune homme prend connaissance de la prophétie et cherche à s'éloigner de ceux qu'il croit être ses parents. Guidés par le hasard et le destin, ses pas le mènent vers Thèbes. Sur la route il tue un homme suite à une altercation – sans savoir qu'il s'agit de son véritable père. Arrivé à Thèbes il libère la ville de l'oppression du Sphinx et reçoit en récompense le trône de la ville ainsi que la main de la reine veuve - sans savoir qu'il s'agit de sa véritable mère. Mais bientôt la ville est touchée par le fléau de la peste : consultant un oracle, Œdipe, après l'avoir nié de toute son âme, finit par se rendre compte de la vérité : la prophétie s'est accomplie. Il se crève alors les yeux de désespoir et s'enfuit de la ville.

Les dernières scènes, de retour au xx^e siècle, montrent un homme aveugle joué par le même acteur qu'Œdipe, guidé par un jeune garçon à travers les rues d'une ville moderne.

Giasone, alla ricerca del mitico Vello d'Oro, viene aiutato nell'impresa da Medea (Callas), regina sacerdotessa della Colchide, che s'innamora perdutamente dell'argonauta fuggendo con lui. Dieci anni dopo però Giasone decide di accettare in sposa la figlia di Creonte (Massimo Girotti), re di Corinto, abbandonando Medea che, per reazione, ordisce una razionale e feroce vendetta uccidendo la rivale ed i figli avuti con l'amato, condannandolo all'eterna solitudine. Medea, rispetto al precedente Edipo Re è sicuramente un film molto più ardito, non tanto per le tematiche (il conflitto fra la società moderna razionalista di Giasone con quella antica selvaggia e mistica di Medea) ma piuttosto per la sua realizzazione; Pasolini scatena nel film un piacere visivo sublime nella la bellezza dei costumi, delle scenografie (affidate a Dante Ferretti) e dei paesaggi ancestrali, dove si fondono meravigliosamente elementi contrastanti non senza qualche forzatura, come l'accostamento di Pisa con il paesaggio Siriano. Tuttavia non convince del tutto nella narrazione: troppo discontinua, sussiegosa, impregnata di quei lunghissimi silenzi, indubbiamente suggestivi, che impediscono di fatto l'emergere della personalità dei protagonisti ed una comprensione più ampia della storia.

To win the kingdom his uncle took from his father, Jason must steal the golden fleece from the land of barbarians, where Medea is royalty and a powerful sorceress, where human sacrifice helps crops to grow. Medea sees Jason and swoons, then enlists her brother's aid to take the fleece. She then murders her brother and becomes Jason's lover. Back in Greece, the king keeps the throne, the fleece has no power, and Medea lives an exile's life, respected but feared, abandoned by Jason. When she learns he's to marry the king's daughter, Medea tames her emotions and sends gifts via her sons; then, loss overwhelms her and she unleashes a fire storm on the king, the bride, and Jason.

Le centaure Chiron apprend à son élève Jason qu'il est l'héritier du trône de Thessalie. Il réclame son dû au Roi Pélias, qui lui promet la couronne en échange de la Toison d'Or, symbole de prospérité gardé en Colchide. Séduite par Jason, Médée la fille du roi de Colchide l'aide à voler le trésor et s'enfuit avec. Ils se réfugient à Corinthe, où règne Créon. Dix ans après, Jason s'éprend de la fille de Créon. La vengeance de Médée, mère de deux enfants, sera terrible…Pour les époux adultères, Médée incarne depuis des siècles un garde-fou. Une idée de la terre brûlée conjugale autrement plus dissuasive qu'une tape sur les doigts. Sa vengeance est folle, monstrueuse, narcissique et enflammée, en digne fille du Soleil qu'elle est. Totale. Médée est peut-être avant tout barbare – terme dont Pasolini disait que c'était le mot qu'il aimait le plus au monde. La barbarie renvoie à une contrée et à un temps primitifs hantés par le Sacré et le Profane. Médée travaille donc ces questions – vitales pour un auteur hanté par le sens de l'Histoire et l'essence de l'Homme – avec incandescence, jusqu'à une rare sécheresse. Pasolini conclut avec, une trilogie – entamée avec L'Evangile selon Saint Matthieu et Œdipe-Roi - sur les mythes sous la forme d'un conte âpre mais aussi théorique. Film littéraire – comme souvent chez Pasolini, pour qui écrire et tourner étaient la même chose - qui pourra égarer les spectateurs, privés des notes de bas de pages ou de leur petit Profil d'une œuvre.
